Cricket is played with bat and ball and includes two competing sides (teams) of 11 players each. Since the team has 11 players, of which 2 must be bowlers and a wicket keeper, only 9 other places can be occupied at the same time.

Cricket is the national summer sport of England and is now played around the world, particularly in Australia, India, Pakistan, the West Indies and the British Isles.

Cricket is played with bat and ball and includes two competing sides (teams) of 11 players each. The field is oval in shape with a rectangular area in the middle called the pitch, 22 yards (20.12 meters) long and 10 feet (3.04 meters) wide. On the ground at each end of the pitch are two sets of three bats called wickets. Each passage has a horizontal component at the top called a rail. Both sides take turns batting and bowling (pitching); each over is called an “inning” (always plural). Each side has one or two overs, depending on the pre-agreed duration of the game, with the goal being to score the most points. The bowler bowls the ball with a straight arm and tries to break (hit) the wicket with the ball so that it falls. This is one of several ways a racket can be fired or removed. One player bowls six balls into one wicket (thus completing the “over”) and then the other bowler from his side bowls six balls into the opposite wicket. The batting side defends its wicket.

Two batsmen come on at once and the batsman who is hit (the striker) tries to knock the ball out of the wicket. Strikes can be defensive or offensive. A defensive shot may protect the post, but it deprives the rebounder of time to run to the opposite post. In this case, the batsman does not need to run and play continues with the second delivery. If the batsman is allowed to bat, he changes places with another batsman (non-batsman) of the other wicket. A run is scored each time both batsmen reach the opposite wicket. If the batsman has enough time without being spotted and dismissed, the batsman can continue to travel back and forth between the wickets, gaining extra runs each time he reaches the other side. There is an outer boundary around the cricket pitch. A ball that hits or goes over the boundary is worth 4 points if it hits the ground and then reaches the boundary, or 6 points if it reaches the boundary from the air (fly ball). The team with the most runs wins the game. If both teams are unable to complete their innings within the allotted time, the match is declared a draw. Scores in the hundreds are common in cricket matches.

Cricket matches range from informal matches played on village greens on weekend afternoons to top-level five-day international Test matches played in large stadiums by leading professional players.

It is thought that cricket may have started as early as the 13th century when country boys would throw the ball into the sheepfold on stumps or wickets. The door consists of two uprights and a bar on top of the groove. The beam is called a “bail” and the entire gate is called a “wicket”. The fact that the fence could be moved when a passage was taken made it superior to stumps, and the name was later applied to upright hurdle stands. Early manuscripts have different views on the size of the wicket, which was given a third stump in the 1770s, but by 1706 the step (the area between the two wickets) was 22 yards long.

The ball was once thought to be a stone, but it has remained unchanged since the 17th century. Its modern weight, determined in 1774, is between 5.5 and 5.75 ounces (156 and 163 grams).

The primitive stick was undoubtedly a shaped branch similar to the modern hockey stick, but longer and heavier. The transition to the level of the bat was a defense against long bowling developed by cricketers from the small village of Hambledon in southern England. The handle of the club was shortened while the blade was straightened and widened, resulting in forward play, hitting and cutting. As bowling technology was not very advanced during this period, the 18th century bowling was dominated by the stroke.

The first mention of a match of elevens was played in Sussex in 1697 with a stake of 50 guineas. Kent met Surrey in the first recorded inter-county match at Dartford in 1709, around which time the codex was probably played, although the earliest known version of such rules dates from 1744. There was already a set of laws (rules) in place for playing cricket. Sources indicate that cricket was confined to the southern counties of England in the early 18th century, but its popularity grew and eventually spread to London, particularly at the Artillery Field in Finsbury, Kent, and across England in 1744. Here was a famous match between the teams. Heavy betting and disorderly crowds are common at games.

The aforementioned Hambledon Club, which played at Broadhalfpenny Down in Hampshire, was a major force in cricket in the second half of the 18th century before the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) emerged in London. The club’s predecessor was the Cricket Club, which played at the White Conduit Fields. In 1787 he moved to Lord’s Cricket Ground in St. Marylebone and became MCC. The first revised version of the Codex was published the following year. Named after founder Thomas Lord, Lord’s has had three locations throughout its history. In 1814, Lord’s moved to its current location in St John’s Wood and became the seat of world cricket.

The first match between North County and South County was played in 1836, which is a clear proof of the spread of cricket. In 1846 an All-English Eleven, formed by William Clarke of Nottingham, began a tour of the country, and from 1852 some of the leading pundits, including John Wisden (later to compile the first famous Wisden Cricket Yearbook), withdrew from the England team . With the formation of the All-England League, both teams had a monopoly on the best cricketing talent until the rise of county cricket. In 1859 they provided players for the first British overseas touring team.
